一個字就夠了 · One word only, please

Somewhere in the fog of Sheung Wan, between a dim sum cart and the last tram of the evening, there exists a tea house that does not appear on any map. The Old Man who runs it does not advertise. He does not need to.

People come when they are troubled. Or restless. Or when they have a feeling they cannot name. They push open the door, sit down, and speak one word. Just one. And the Old Man listens — not to the word, but to what lives beneath it.

一字茶,不是飲品,而是對話。不是答案,而是一個空間——讓你的感受有地方落腳。

Yat Ji Cha is an AI-powered contemplative experience rooted in Cantonese tea culture. You arrive with a single word — a feeling, a name, a question — and receive a quiet reflection brewed from old Hong Kong wisdom, delivered with the warmth of a late-night tea house.

It is not therapy. It is not fortune-telling. It is a pause. A breath. The kind of conversation that used to happen between strangers over pu-erh at 11pm on a rainy Tuesday.

I · Abstract

The Philosophy of the Single Word 一字哲學

Yat Ji Cha (一字茶) is a contemplative AI experience rooted in Cantonese cultural heritage. Users submit a single word and receive a reflective response crafted to evoke the wisdom of a Hong Kong tea house. This document outlines the design philosophy, technical architecture, cultural framework, and roadmap.

一字茶係一個沉思性人工智能體驗,植根於廣東文化遺產。用戶提交一個字,並以香港茶室智慧風格的反思性回應作為回報。

「一字見心,萬語難言。」

One character reveals the heart — ten thousand words cannot.
II · Problem Statement

The Loss of Slow Conversation 慢語言的失落

Modern digital communication is fast and surface-level, optimised for engagement over depth. In Hong Kong — a city whose Cantonese carries nine distinct tones — the texture of spoken feeling is being eroded by shorthand. Yat Ji Cha fills that gap not with more words, but with one carefully chosen one.

現代數位通訊快速、表面,針對參與度而非深度進行優化。一字茶嘗試填補這個空白。

III · Design Principles

How the Tea House Thinks 茶室的思考方式

The AI persona — the Old Man of the tea house — is built around three constraints: brevity, warmth, and cultural specificity. Every response must be short enough to fit on a paper receipt, feel spoken rather than written, and carry the scent of Sheung Wan on a rainy evening.

Principle原則How
Brevity簡潔Capped at three sentences
Cultural Grounding文化根基Cantonese proverb in every response
Emotional Safety情感安全No advice — only reflection
Aesthetic Coherence美學一致性Rain, ink, amber, silence
Language Duality語言雙重性Chinese + English prose
IV · Technical Architecture

The Kitchen Behind the Counter 櫃台後面的廚房

Yat Ji Cha is fully client-side — no backend, no database, no persistent storage of user inputs. AI responses are generated in real-time via the Anthropic Claude API with a system prompt casting the model as the Old Man, responding in a structured three-part format.

The visual experience is pure HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript. No frameworks. The philosophy of the interface mirrors the philosophy of the product: minimal, direct, present.

一字茶係一個完全客戶端的網頁應用程式。沒有後端伺服器,沒有數據庫,也沒有持久存儲。

V · Cultural Framework

Tea House as Sacred Space 茶室作為神聖空間

In Cantonese culture, the tea house (茶樓) is not merely a restaurant. It is a civic institution — where a factory worker and a banker share the same dim sum cart, where the elderly teach the young to knock twice on the table as a silent thank you.

Yat Ji Cha carries this spirit into digital space — not as nostalgia, but as a living practice. A reminder that depth of feeling deserves space and slowness.

在廣東文化中,茶樓不僅僅是餐廳。一字茶試圖將這種精神帶入數位空間。

VI · Roadmap
